Front Hubs

Just did some searching for prices on hubs, and I know Timkens are the preferred brand, but prices are kind of steep. Are there any other brands that are reliable but less expensive. Cheapest Timkens I found were on Ebay for about $138 with free shipping.

That's a pretty good price for the Timkens.

I bought a set of Callahan hubs off ebay in April 2013 and haven't had a problem with them yet. At less than $80 for a pair and less than an hour to change out both of them, I'll keeping putting the cheaper ones in.

Personally I'd be a bit suspicious of them being genuine Timken at that price.

I'm running Timkens on my truck but given some of the success stories from Detroit Axle I figure I'd give them a try next time I need hub bearings for anything. Don't know their country of origin though (probably china at the price...).

I checked Ebay today and nothing is identified as Detroit Axle. There are Moog, Dorman, GMB, Centric and Mevotech.

To tell the difference, I look at the rear seal, markings heat marks on the flange and hub (or lack thereof), wire and studs. Except for the markings on the flange, they look the same.

They're probably made by the same children in China. The better ones are made by teenagers.

It's a shame because Callahan Auto Parts used to really stand for top quality. Ever since Callahan parts were sold at Zalinsky Auto Parts Stores, the quality has been going downhill. They now have a guarantee on the box, but honestly, one can look at a steak by staring up a cow's ass but I would rather take the butcher's word for it.

Callahan used to be sold by the fat guy in a little coat but he once set my office on fire and then asked if we validate.

I was looking at the Detroit axle ones next seeing as my timkins are shot after only a year. I saw the Detroit axle ones on amazon for 75 a pair.

I just picked them up on Amazon for 95.50 for a pair. I replaced both sides this time around. The passenger one was still original. The driver side one, well, I am on my 3rd. Truck has 180,000 miles and is still going strong. After doing the driver's side, took it out to check to make sure if I really needed to do the right, still had noise going to the right in a sharp turn. So back to the garage and changed out the passenger. Still was suspecting the shield was rubbing on the driver's side. After both were changed out, a 2 second ride confirmed the plate had warped a little and was touching the very bottom edge to the rotor as it spun. Not all the time, just enough warpage when turning right or slightly hitting the brakes. Took the driver side off and bent the plate back away from the rotor for a uniform gap. Now everything is working great!! Side note, when we did the passenger side, we noticed the pins for the ABS sensor were pushed in the connector a little and it wasn't making connection. Had to hold the wires in the back of the connector to get it to seat correctly.

I just eliminated that eventual possibility by removing them when I replaced my hubs. Totally useless.
