Speaker replacement, 2003 with Bose

I have done a lot of reading here and on the old site but need a little more specific help ...

1) How do I get at the dash speakers to replace them (one is cracked, I should probably replace as a pair)? I am happy with stock sound, I just want to replace the speakers.

2) What kind of speaker goes there ... 3.5", 2ohm speaker, is that correct?

3) One speaker is gone in the rear - the rear doors looks like a quick job to get the panels off, what is the size and resistance of those speakers if I want to do a minimum of retrofitting? I think I will probably get those from Crutchfield, but I don't know if they have anything for the front dash.

a simple google search i came up with these.. not sure what the ohm's are.. but these are the size of the factory speakers.

• Dash: 3-1/2"
• Front door: 6-1/2"
• Back door: 6-1/2"

hope this helps you.. I have gotten car audio equipment from crutchfield in the past and always had good luck with them.. really competitive price's is alway's a plus.

1- Getting to the dash speakers

Pop off the A pillars



Pop off the trim piece across the dash
**Note from me - watch out for the "guiding" tabs that are closest to the windshield. They are flimsy.





Remove the speakers

Remove the 3 screws that retain the speaker to the instrument panel (IP) substrate.
Disconnect the speaker electrical connector.
Remove the speaker from the IP.

Install is reverse of removal.

1 - I would only do the one that's broke, unless you get a score on ebay.

2 - This is a bose (UQA) dash speaker. I don't know the ohms offhand, they have been posted on trailvoy.

You can run aftermarket in the rear, but the rears don't get a full range signal from the bose amp so don't get any crazy three ways with supertweets or anything.

Personally I would swap em out for OEM replacement. There has been some cases where the rear pods have to be modified to get the speakers to fit (even if crutchfield says they do).

Wow, thanks for the detailed info. I see big money for the AC Delco dash replacement (looking at RockAuto) ... I don't know if I want to go used there. If I am keeping the stock head unit, I don't think there are other good options for the dash.

The rear, though, I may look at aftermarket once I get to the replacement.

No prob man. Yeah I wouldn't buy new OEMs. I'd fab mounts for aftermarket tweets before doing that. But, I've done used OEM swaps using ebay with no issues. 1933trader is a good ebay source.

If you've got some fab'ing skills, swapping the rears to aftermarket shouldn't be an issue.

It should be noted that Bose's speakers are actually supposed to be measured in centimeters. 6.5 cm in the dash, 20cm in the front doors and 13 cm in the rear doors. Converted to inches:

Dash: 2.559 inches (~2 1/2)
Front: 7.874 inches (~7 7/8)
Rear: 5.118 inches (~5 1/8)

Those centimeter measurements are the officially-published specs from the Bose website in the TrailBlazer.

If I remember right this is the impedance model:
Dash: 4 ohms
Front: 1 ohm
Rear: 2 ohms

Seriously. Strange resistances, eh? Back in the 90s some Bose-equipped vehicles had 0.5ohm woofers!

Crazy specs. Since I am keeping the stock head unit, does anyone know the power range of the OEM rear door speaker, since it would only make sense to purchase something in a similar range if I go aftermarket?

They crazy specs are probably why I have read many aren't happy with aftermarket when keeping the Bose head unit ... I am not a stereo expert, but I think if you have a higher impedance and power range than the OEM the sound quality is going to be pretty poor. I am just looking to get functional, but the rear door is completely gone and the front passenger dash cracks quite a bit (right by my wife, so it is annoying). Have to fix the rear door because we often throw the sound to the back when the kids watch a DVD.

What are you asking for the dash? I would guess you replaced all of your speakers, so did you have the rear door as well? You can PM me if you would like.
