Hello All. New member. First post. 2003 Envoy. 220K miles. Have code P0753 (Shift Solenoid A Electrical) locked in. Only code. Only other issue is Cruise Control (CC) will not engage. I have read that some trans related codes will block the CC, but I don't know if the two issues are related. When driving I have two gears. Not sure which two. Believe 2nd and 3rd based on the code. I mention this because I have read that with this code or a failure of either Shift Solenoid (SS) that the trans only engages in 3rd gear. The vehicle is definitely shifting one time. At highway speeds (65 - 70 mph) I have about 3000 rpm. I have checked fuses IGN0, 4WD, TBC IG, and all other IGN and PCM fuses. All have continuity and batt volts on both sides. For the CC, I have checked fuses HVAC1 and VEH STOP, and checked tail/brake lamps. All good. Trans fluid is not new, but is clean and has good level. I am pretty sure that SS-A is not picking up/stuck closed. Stumped on the cause. Based on what I've read so far I'm thinking (1) a bad ground somewhere, (2) Failed SSA, (3) Bad Ignition Switch. Any thoughts on my next trouble shooting move. I'm leaning toward checking the trans harness for proper volts/resistance. Would appreciate any advise. Thanks. Drew...

Welcome! Was that somebody back on trailvoy suggesting the ignition switch? What a preposterous idea. :rotfl:

I'd guess harness or solenoid. When was your last transmission fluid change and filter service? When did you acquire the truck? Do you know its long term maintenance history?

Thanks for the warm welcome. I've been doing a lot of internet reading on a lot of different sites. I'm not sure where I read the ignition switch was a possible cause. It did come up on a couple sites. Discussion was that a lot of circuits come thru the ignition switch. The trans issue coupled with the cruise control issue is why I thought it might be a possible cause. I take it you don't agree lol. Truck has 220K miles. Bought it with 140K miles. I have not changed the trans fluid or filter. It may never have been done. The fluid looks clean and level is good. It is probably well over due for a change out. Do you think my issue could be resolved with a fluid and filter change? If I'm in that deep, I should probably do the solenoids at the same time? What do you think? As far as the long term maintenance history goes. Its decent. Most of the maintenance on the truck is corrective rather than preventative. Thanks for the dialogue by the way.

If it's confirmed that the solenoid is bad, you could just do that one or you could do them all. Some around here would suggest throwing on an upgrade kit since you're already more than wrist-deep in there, Corvette servo and some other stuff are common swaps.

Do note that while the trans pan holds 5 quarts, the total system holds 3 times that. There is a method some use which involves disconnecting one of the cooler lines (the one heading toward the radiator), hooking a hose on leading to a bucket, then holding the pedal all the way in (to activate Clear Flood mode, it won't try ignition, just cranking) then being very very very careful not to run it absolutely bone dry.

Others drop the pan and change the 5 quarts, run it for a bit to get the old and new mixed, then drop the pan again, repeat (often twice). Then some just do the 5 quarts and filter and that's it.

Did a little more trouble shooting. Don't know if this is relevant. But I only have 2nd and 3rd gear when manually operating trans with shifter.

Sliding underneath the truck next. Do both Shift Solenoids pick up in park with ignition in the ON position? Should I be able to hear the solenoids pick up thru the pan if I connect battery voltage to the leads?

Thanks again for the help.

the easiest thing to do, is call around transmission shops and find one that offers free diagnostics....

Hello all. Just finished up. I paid for a trans flush at a local oil change shop. Swapped out both Shift Solenoids and the trans filter. Truck is shifting like new thru all 4 gears. Check engine cleared on its own during the test drive. Cruise Control (CC) is also operating again. Must be the P0753 code was preventing the CC from engaging. Probably paid a little too much for the parts and the flush. But truck is running like a champ again so I'm calling it a victory. Thanks for the advise. Drew...

One more thing. Bench tested both old Solenoids. One tested 21 Ohms. One tested 0 Ohms. Smoking gun. Thanks again. Drew...

I had the same problem, p0753 was coming up. After the transmission shop told me i needed to rebuild it and they needed a deposit of $500, I said (after reading this thread in the waiting room) "but sir, cant you just change the solenoids?" His response was "we dont f with solenoids" lol this is AAMCO by the way. needless to say I took it to another shop, had them change the fluid and filter and both solenoids and the truck had been running great for 10k miles.... until an unrelated problem popped up :(
