I have a 2004 TB with the 4.2 I was wondering if you could open up and gut the evap canister and reinstall or would that throw a code or something? Thanks in advance.

The one mounted on the engine? Will probably throw a leak code since the computer won't be able to control the purge process the way it wants to.

The one mounted by the spare tire.

For reference, that's the vent solenoid, the one on the engine is the purge solenoid. Either way though, my answer is still that it will throw a code. Part of GM's official code P0440 inspection process is to check the vent solenoid for failure, so an improperly functioning vent solenoid can throw an EVAP code.

And neither of those are the "canister" which the posted question asks about.
I’m not aware of anything else mounted “by the spare tire” that would constitute an “evap canister”. Some people erroneously refer to the vent solenoid as the vapor/evap canister. The former is wrong, the latter is at least imprecise. The vapor canister (which should probably be referred to as the charcoal canister to avoid confusion) is not in a position I’d call “by the spare tire”, but who knows, I’ve been wrong before.

OP, do you mean the vent solenoid which is located above the rear end of the gas tank, or the charcoal canister which is mounted further forward near a frame rail?

It's a cheaper fix to just replace it all. I have a 2003 I6 and it was throwing Evap Codes. I had to replace the entire rear fuel/evap system to get it to stop. Pressure Sensor, Fuel Filler Hose, Filler Hose extension to the tank and the Evap canister. It took about 3 hours or less with the tire removed and the spare knocked out the way. You have to install the filler hose extension first, then add only the metal part of the filler tube, then the rubber part to the filler door - IN THIS ORDER! Take the filler tube apart because it has to rest (with no strain) on the frame mount and then bolt it in place before you add the last part to the filler door. There is no other way. Oiling the tubes makes it very easy to rotate as need onto the mounting ports, etc.....

I went ahead and replaced the fuel vapor canister with a new one and it worked. Maybe this will help anyone who is having trouble putting fuel in their TB.
