Encoder motor issues

My rig has the NVG 226 / Np8 transfer case and I lost the encoder motor sensor in the original encoder motor about a month ago, I ordered a doormam replacement and installed it, it lasted two days and the gear reduction unit portion of it broke and left me stuck on a rock , actually split in two inside lol, I limped the truck home with a pair of vise grips on the selector shaft lol, Installed another brand new doorman and tested it on the hoist , it also did the same thing.

The transfer case or truck show no other signs of any problems and all modes are manually selectable so I dont believe its a internal problem in the case .

Any suggestions before I install another ?

Don't trust Dormans. Many things they make are OK. Encoder motors not so much.

Can a internal problem in the case cause a encoder motor to physically break, also if the case were binding shouldn't the fuse blow before the motor broke itself?

It all depends on the gear ratio and the strength of the materials in the gears. If you can move the control shaft on the transfer case, then the root cause is going to be a mystery for a while.

I neglected to ask at first - how many miles onthe truck, and has the transfer case fluid been changed religiously every 50K?

Ok, so I pulled the t-case and split it and found no damage and\or any reason for encoder motors to be breaking, so I went and bit the bullet and paid the extra money for factory reman encoder motor and installed it this evening, we just got home from 52Km of some real harsh off road with a mix of large rock and lots of mud, with absolutely no hick ups.

DO NOT BUY DOORMAN ENCODER MOTORS

I agree with Roadie on the Dorman motor, mine was a month old and leaked water in it causing it to fail.
Also on dis assembly the motor is not built the same, the Dorman replacement is a 2 brush motor and the original is a 4 brush motor which gives better starting characteristics I believe and longer life.
