Coolant Leak

Hey all,

So I have a problem with losing coolant in my 2005 Envoy I6.

There is no coolant on my driveway from it leaking out but I go through about a gallon a month of coolant because of the reservoir being empty.

I've looked at all the hoses and seen no leaks from hoses or clamps. I also had it pressure tested with no noticeable leak on the pressure test (at a mechanic for 30 minutes).

Lastly, there is some coolant splatters that have appeared on the front of my engine block that look like they have been splattered from the fan.

I'm thinking it could be a leaky water pump since this is only running while my envoy is running (hence no leaks on driveway)?

Please help if you have any ideas.

Any play in the pump at all?

Mine at one point started leaking from one of the heater hose connections, but only when the engine was running and system pressurized.

The maybe 1/4" wobble while running is the only play in the fan... haven't tried it without the belt. Do you think I need to check it without the belt on?

I've looked at the engine up and down while running and can't find any leak, nothing dripping, the only coolant that I see is what's splattered on the front of the block.

I'll double check the heater hoses while running, thanks.

Yes take the belt off. As long as it has tension you probably will not notice if the pump is bad

It's more than likely the water pump I just finished replacing mine a couple hours ago. Had all those same exact symptoms. Splatters every where but no leaks in the driveway. You won't be able to see it until you pull the pump out but it's more then likely coming out of the weep hole on the bottom of the pump. Took a few hours because of the fan clutch nut on the pump was froze up,actually had to put heat to it. Water pump is $30 an worth a shot to see if it fixes your problem.

Thanks for the advice. It's not leaking much at all now for some reason so I'm going to leave it be for a little bit but it's on my list of "to-do's" this summer!

Hardest part of replacing the water pump is loosening the fan and bolts. Other than that, it's relatively easy to do.

Don't let it go too long as it will take a dump at the worst time leaving you stranded or in a rush to do it. The fan really is the hardest part. Cut a slot in the fan shroud to clear the top hose rad nipple easier.

Make sure its not a pin hole in the rad that opens when hot and its the fan splashing the block. Size of the splash marks should help tell that.
