I am swapping 4L60E trannys from a 2002 trailblazer v6 to my 2004 trailblazer. The plugs on the switches are different as u can see in the pics. Can I use the old safety switch from 04 on the 02 transmission or not?
Which side of it does the "detecting?" I'd compare the sensing part of the sensors side by side and make the decision..
Also I'm gonna let someone else tell you whether it's okay or not because I'm far from educated on the transmissions. Someone else will probably chime in tomorrow.
When I rebuilt that 4t65e I ran into quite a few spots to where I could use the upgrade without issue and some parts I couldn't. The tranny was built the same month they started making quite a few changes so it had some of the old and some of the new. Some parts didn't matter and some did. Some depended on whether or not another part was upgraded or not. Talk about a pain.
Do both switches fit over the shaft on the side of the tranny? If so, there shouldn't be a problem using your old switch. All they do is mechanically sense the position of your tranny and the switch itself is what sends out the signal for backup lights, gear selector on cluster, etc. You could hook it up and use a multimeter to check that each terminal is giving out a change in voltage just to be safe.
THanks marine yes they both fit over the shaft and mounting holes line up fine . Im gonna give it a shot I just dont want to get it in and have to pull the tran back out, My gut tells me it should work but all references I find only show up to 2003 compatible with previous years and 2004 stands alone. Im hoping its only because of the difference in the electrical connections is why they dont show them as a compatible applicatioon
The 4l60e is in a lot of different makes and models. For the most part the tranny is the same. There are some slight differences especially between cars and trucks.
I'm about positive the harness was just an upgrade. I know somewhere along the line there was an issue with not being able to remove the harness. It pretty much welded itself to the contacts on the switch so you couldn't get it off without breaking the switch. Maybe that's the reason behind the update.
If I were in your shoes I put the other switch on and wouldn't worry about it at all. I'm 99.9% confident that it won't cause any issues at all. I just don't see how it could. I know I already mentioned it but the movement from the tranny to the switch is mechanical. Nothing along the years of the 4l60e has changed about that. It's the switch that changed and that's what sends the signals to the rest of the vehicle.
You can get to that switch easily when they tranny is installed and I'm sure there are ways of dealing with it after that install if for some reason it doesn't work. It will though.
That is exactly what I ran into when I tried to remove the harness from that switch , It would not come free of the switch untill I cracked the casing on the switch side. I have already changed the switch AND had already broken the switch before reading your post so I was relieved to read it since I was obligated to go with mine at this point.

********* Transmission swap Update : Despite a little scare after start up and test drive , the new transmission is working great and the pns switch swap was a success! The transmission would not shift out of first gear at first so after a mild panic and brainstorm to try to think of a solution other than pulling tranny again, I found the problem was in the wire harness plug. One of the pins and not alignedc correctly and bent over causing that pin to have no contact . Through out several trouble codes including one that declared no contact with the transfer case; another for speed sensor ect..... I was relieved to locate the problem and now it runs better than it has since she has had it . It really exposed the condition of the old one had been going out and slowly becoming more of a problem over the last year. It was to the poiunt you had to get a running start to climb the small curb into the driveway and if not ther would not be enough power or at least enough geat to grab to overcome the curb. That was the first clue.
